Annette Schryen

Annette Schryen, born 1968 in Hamm, North Rhine-Westphalia, is a freelance art historian and culture manager. She lives and works in Berlin, where she studied Art History and Aesthetics (Technische Universität Berlin) and Ethnology, Linguistics and Culture and Media Management (Freie Universität Berlin). For her thesis Audience Development she carried out fieldwork on visitor-orientated strategies of museums, based on the example of the Museum of Modern Art, New York. She then completed her final thesis for a M.A. degree on the work and critical reception of painter Agnes Martin, titled Das Schweigen der Bilder. Zur Rezeption von Agnes Martin.

The emphasis of Annette Schryen’s professional activities lies in the field of modern and contemporary art. She gathered experience in mediation work in the museums of the Nationalgalerie Berlin, developed the visitor services for the 3rd Berlin Biennale and was part of the communications team for the documenta 12. She then spent 4 years as head of communications and mediation for the Boros Collection and was also responsible for museum and exhibition projects for the Boros communications agency, e.g. at the Staatliche Museen Berlin, the abc art berlin contemporary, the Gallery Weekend Berlin and Art Week Berlin. Since 2015 she has worked for the interdisciplinary design studio Manuel Raeder and heads their publishing division BOM DIA BOA TARDE BOA NOITE.

As a research assistant, Annette Schryen has also contributed to a range of book and exhibition projects including Tempel der Kunst. Die Geburt des öffentlichen Museums in Deutschland 1701–1815, edited by Benedicte Savoy (Zabern 2006), Das Humboldt-Forum. Die Wiedergewinnung der Idee, edited by Horst Bredekamp and Peter-Klaus Schuster (Nicolai 2016), and the exhibition Harry Graf Kessler. Flaneur der Moderne for the Stiftung Brandenburger Tor (2016). For bauhaus imaginista she is largely responsible for loans and transport.
