Grant Watson

Curator

Grant Watson is a curator and researcher based in London. With Marion von Osten he developed the conceptual and structural framework for bauhaus imaginista which was launched in 2016.

Research projects include How We Behave (2012 – ongoing) with If I Can’t Dance, Amsterdam, exploring life practice and politics through filmed interviews in cities including London, Sao Paulo, Mumbai and Los Angeles, shown at Nottingham Contemporary, the Showroom, London, State of Concept, Athens, Extra City, Antwerp and the Whitechapel Gallery, London. Projects addressing transnationalism include Practice International (2013 – 2015) at Iniva, London, Iaspis, Sweden, Casco, Holland, and Tagore, Pedagogy and Contemporary Visual Cultures (2013 – 2014). Long-term research into modern and contemporary Indian art, has resulted in exhibitions including Drawing Space (2000) Iniva, Santhal Family Positions Around an Indian Sculpture (2008) MuHKA, Antwerp, Nasreen Mohamedi Notes (2010) OCA, Oslo, and Open Eye Policy (2013) on Sheela Gowda, IMMA, Dublin. An exhibition expanding Raymond William’s Keywords, with Tate’s collection was shown at Tate Liverpool (2013).

A series of international projects researching textiles histories include Social Fabric (2012) at Iniva, Lunds Konsthal and Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum, Mumbai, Textiles Art and the Social Fabric (2009) at MuHKA and Textiles: Open Letter (2013) with the Abteiberg Museum, Mönchengladbach, Generali Foundation, Vienna.

Watson was Senior Curator at the Institute of International Visual Arts, London (2010–2014), Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Antwerp (2006–2010) and Curator of Visual Arts at Project, Dublin (2001–2006). He holds a PhD in Visual Cultures from Goldsmiths College, London, and is a tutor at the Royal College of Art (2015 – ongoing).
